3/2/1976- In a nationwide broadcast, Head of State General Murtala R. Muhammad announced the creation of seven additional new states and renamed others. 

This brought the total number of states in Nigeria to nineteen in 1976.

Also on the same day he promulgated decree 6 of 1976 which created Abuja, making it the new Federal Capital Territory (FCT). 

The new states he created includes Bauchi, Benue, Imo,Niger,Ogun and Ondo States.

Ten days later, General Murtala R. Muhammad 37,was gruesomely murdered in a failed coup.
